Muka muka, movie lovers! Get ready for a horror-fying experience because “Deliverance” is here to shake you to your core. This ain’t your typical exorcism flick, folks. This one’s got layers, like an onion, but instead of tears, it’s gonna give you chills.
Now, I caught this flick on Netflix (missed it in theaters, darn it!), and let me tell you, Andra Day as Ebony Jackson? She brought it. This struggling mama with a past and a whole lotta demons (literally and figuratively) to battle? Give this woman all the awards! And Glenn Close? Okay, I’ll admit, I was side-eying her church lady getup at first, but she shut me down with her performance. Ghetto and godly? Glenn Close can rock anything, apparently.
This movie ain’t just about jump scares and spooky voices (though it’s got those too, don’t worry). It’s about family, struggle, and the horrors of the system. You’ll be yelling at the screen, “Girl, don’t go in the basement!”, but hey, that’s what makes horror movies fun, right? The horror is horroring, as I like to say.
And let’s talk about Mo’Nique as the social worker, Cynthia Henry. She brings a whole new dimension to the story, and that backstory? Whew, had me reaching for the tissues. This movie ain’t afraid to get real, y’all.
But here’s the thing that really got me excited: seeing more People of Color in roles that break the mold. Andra Day, a singer turned actress, killing it in a horror film? Glenn Close embracing a character outside her usual comfort zone? Yes, please! We need more of this.
Just like Jordan Peele jumped from comedy to horror and blew everyone away, “Deliverance” shows that talent knows no boundaries. Anyone can shine in any genre, and it’s about time Hollywood caught up.
So, if you’re looking for a horror movie that will scare you, move you, and make you think, “Deliverance” is your jam. Just be prepared to sleep with the lights on for a few nights. You’ve been warned!
